Weather update: Educational institutions closed amid heavy rain prediction in Hyderabad; orange alert in 2 Kerala districts

Almost a week after August ended at its driest since 1901, rains have seen renewal in many parts of the country. In Hyderabad, educational institutions were announced shut on Tuesday as heavy rain lashed the city since early hours and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert.

An orange alert is also in place in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts of Kerala, while Odisha is likely to witness widespread rainfall in the next 48 hours.

According to the IMD bulletin, southern parts of West Bengal are likely to receive more rainfall till Wednesday, while the weatherman has forecast heavy rainfall, lightning and thunderstorms within the next five days across several parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana

As an orange alert remains in place in Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has deployed civic teams of more than 3,000 personnel to ensure waterlogged areas are cleared across the city. According to the Met department, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain or thundershower at times with intense spells in parts of the city today.

The Hyderabad collector said in a post on X, “In light of the heavy rainfall forecast in Hyderabad, the government has declared today a holiday for all educational institutions in Hyderabad. Stay indoors and stay safe.”

In the state, Serilingampally recorded the highest rainfall with 11.5 cm. Heavy waterlogging was reported, even as water entered houses, in Vikarabad.

Andhra Pradesh

The Meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall lightning and thunderstorms within the next five days across several parts of the state, an official said on Monday. Heavy to very heavy rains are likely in parts of North Coastal AP (NCAP), South Coastal AP (SCAP), Rayalaseema and Yanam from Monday to Wednesday, along with lightning and thunderstorms.

Kerala

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts for Tuesday and a yellow alert in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. Light, moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall was very likely till September 8.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said that there was a possibility of high waves and storm surges along the Kerala coast during the day. IMD advises fishermen and coastal residents to be cautious, stay away from dangerous areas and avoid sea-related activities.

Karnataka

North Interior Karnataka can expect rainfall on September 6 and 8. Coastal and South Interior Karnataka may receive rainfall from September 6 to 7.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

There is a high chance of moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Andaman & Nicobar Islands from September 5 to 8.

Odisha

The IMD predicted a low-pressure area is likely to form over Odisha in the next 24 hours. expected to bring rains, thunderstorm and lightning in many districts. Senior Scientist of IMD Bhubaneswar Uma Shankar Das told ANI, “Widespread rainfall can occur in the next 48 hours…Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected to occur in parts of North Odisha…Five districts are warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall: Dhenkanal, Angul, Kalahandi, Boudh, and Kandhamal…People have been warned to take safe shelter during lightning and thunderstorms…People should stay away from trees and water bodies…”

Das further said that thunderstorms and lightning are also expected to occur in parts of North Odisha and coastal Odisha. He also said, “Meteorological features suggest heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely for the next 4 to 5 days in some districts of Odisha.”

West Bengal

According to the IMD bulletin, southern parts of West Bengal are likely to receive more rainfall till Wednesday.  A cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area, bringing heavy rain over Gangetic West Bengal till Wednesday morning, officials told PTI.

Bihar

Owing to a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal, Bihar has been witnessing moderate to heavy rainfall in many parts of the state. Rains, however, likely to start reducing from September 6.

Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat

Mumbai is likely to receive moderate rain this week from Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In the neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad, the weather bureau has issued a yellow alert between September 7 and 8, while in Ratnagiri, a yellow alert has been issued since Monday, stating the possibility of heavy rain in isolated pockets throughout the week.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Mahesh Palawat, from Skymet Weather Services, said, “A combination of a low pressure system developing over the north west Bay of Bengal and another cyclonic circulation over interior north Karnataka will bring heavy rain in parts of Vidharbha, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra.”

There is an expected occurrence of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning over a fairly widespread to widespread area in Marathwada from September 6 to September 8. Additionally, Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra are also expected to experience the same weather conditions during the same period.

Lastly, Gujarat Region is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning from September 6 to 7.

Northeast India

Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/thunderstorm with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from September 7 to 8.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness hot and dry weather for a period of two weeks, starting September 4, with brief spells of rain in isolated places. Farmers have been advised to harvest their crops during this period.

Central India

Likely a high chance of light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Vidarbha from September 5 to 8. The same weather conditions are also expected in Chhattisgarh from September 5 to 8, in East Madhya Pradesh from September 5 to 8, and in West Madhya Pradesh from September 6 to 8. There may be isolated instances of very heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh on September 5.

Northwest India

Light/moderate isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over East Uttar Pradesh from September 6 to 7; Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh on September 8.
